Unthought-of: 8 Unusual Kitchen Storage Spaces

Mini-bar Above the Door

The owner of the interior in the photo decided not to leave the space above the doorframe empty and placed a mini-bar there — on a shelf painted the same color as the walls. At such a height, it is entirely suitable to store items not needed every day. The solution is also not devoid of aesthetics — it looks unconventional and highlights the beautiful swing doors. For those who collect expensive, exclusive wines, this is an original way to showcase their collection. Just, of course, make sure to add edges to the shelf, so a bottle doesn’t accidentally fall on your head.

Shelves Above the Bar Counter

Open storage in the kitchen can be arranged not only above the countertop but also in other areas. For example, above the bar counter — as done in this photo example. Several sets of beautiful dishes are placed on the three-tier shelf. As in the previous example, this is not just a storage solution, but also a cool decorative trick. Moreover, it is meaningful — there is a coffee machine under the shelf, right near the cups and coffee packets.

Compact Shelves in the Corner

Small niches and corners often remain empty as they cannot accommodate full-sized furniture — a wardrobe, cabinet, or even a rack. Shelves come to the rescue here. They are fixed in the corner on hidden supports — looks neat, and the space does not remain empty. On the surface, identical minimalist jars with spices and other grocery products are arranged. Another proof that decanting (transferring into beautiful containers) products is necessary.

Shelves on the Side of the Cabinet

Similarly, you can use the side panel of the cabinet. It is seldom used, but unjustly so. The owner of the spacious kitchen in the photo, despite the ample space, decided to use another opportunity for storage organization and placed shelves on the end of the cupboard. The oak color beautifully contrasts with the dark blue body of the cabinet. Here, they also arranged groceries — grains, nuts, pasta, spices in transparent jars in a unified style. To ensure the shelves do not appear too isolated and lonely, they complemented the storage corner with a rail above (with a plant and small bags for sundries) and baskets on the floor. For instance, one can be used for clean kitchen textiles, and another for collecting towels for laundry.

Trolley in the Corner

A movable cart can be used as a mini-bar or for serving dinner by the sofa. However, it can also become an alternative to shelves or a rack — compactness and mobility make this option very convenient. In the small space between the cupboard and the wall in the photo, they placed a metal trolley on wheels. Its potential is maximized here: it stores many kitchen “necessities” — from decanted groceries to cooking utensils. To complete the picture, posters were hung on the walls (a thin black frame delicately matches the frame of the trolley) and a minimalist calendar.

Kitchen Cabinet Door

Even the most spacious kitchen cabinet can be improved. In this example, they additionally utilized the inside of the door. Along its entire height, they fixed slightly protruding rails. The resulting gaps perfectly fit the lids of pots and pans, whose storage often becomes a real headache. They hang by the handles and securely stay in the structure.

Key Cabinet for Utensil Storage

This photo shows a way to give a second life to an old wooden key cabinet. Such were used in hotels in the past. The vintage element will become a neat, yet interesting interior accent, and if necessary, it won’t be hard to restore. In this example, they left the top row of hooks in the key cabinet. But instead of keys, they now hold kitchen utensils: spatulas, ladles, tongs. This method excellently replaces a rail (as such a number of utensils would interfere in the working area) or a drawer (where chaos quickly ensues). An additional hook can be used to hang bags or totes for grocery shopping.

Wall Organizers

A complete complex of dish storage spaces was implemented in the corner in the photo. On a fairly standard shelf above, they placed antique pitchers and teapots. And on two walls, they hung organizers for vertical storage. On the right — with symmetrical hooks, where cups are conveniently placed. An excellent option for a favorite collection. On the left — an organizer similar to those used in home offices, but here it stores mugs, lids, small pots.
