Kitchen Curtains: Types and Beautiful Ideas

Sun is vitality, good mood, and at least natural daylight. But everything should be within reason, and excess is just as inconvenient as the lack of it. In the heat of the kitchen, it’s hard to breathe, work at the stove becomes more difficult, and products spoil faster under direct sunlight. That’s why good curtains in the kitchen are not a luxury but a household necessity!

What fabric to choose?

When choosing fabric for kitchen curtains, keep in mind that they will get more stained, impregnated with odors, and absorb grease. Choose fabrics that are highly resistant to these factors, easy to clean, and quick to dry. If your windows face the sunny side, it’s important that they don’t fade, or else your beautiful curtains will literally fade in just six months.

If you prefer natural materials, consider cotton, linen, or jute. However, fabrics with a small addition of synthetic fibers are better suited – they are stronger, more durable, and less prone to wrinkles. In particular, these are polyester or viscose blends.

Many modern manufacturers use special impregnations that enhance the durability of kitchen curtains against adverse factors. They repel dirt and dust, preserve color, and prevent fire.

Types of kitchen curtains

Nowadays, there are so many types of curtains that choosing the optimal option for the kitchen is not an easy task. Short and long, thin and dense, concise and decorative, voluminous and compact – the eyes run wild. But remember that we are talking about a room where you cook, so don’t forget about practicality! We suggest considering the following options.

Roller shades

The main advantage of roller curtains is their compactness, as the fabric tightly adheres to the window on the guides. This is a more neat and elegant alternative to rough blinds. Roman shades are especially good, as they came to us from ancient times and have regained popularity with the trend of minimalism. The fabric can be fixed at any height, so it is not necessary to keep the window completely open or closed.

These short decorative curtains are more common in coffee shops and restaurants than in residential spaces. But in the kitchen, they are more than suitable, as they strike a balance between decoration and convenience. The frame is attached not above the window but in the middle, allowing natural light to be evenly diffused and the room always feels cozy and comfortable.

French curtains

French curtains feature decorative fabric gathered into elegant, lightweight folds at the bottom. You can adjust their height using special pulls, making them ideal for kitchens. Designers use thin and airy fabrics to create these curtains, resulting in beautiful, rounded waves.

Classic curtains

For large and spacious kitchens or combined studio apartments, voluminous traditional drapes with lambrequins, tiebacks, and multi-layer compositions are appropriate. However, avoid using them near work surfaces, stoves, or sinks to maintain safety and practicality. However, they are quite suitable for the dining area, living room, or as a partition for the balcony entrance.

Priscilla curtains

Priscilla curtains are another cozy and stylish option that is perfect for the kitchen. Two fabric panels are joined at the top for the entire length and the ends are pulled apart in different directions. They look light and elegant but also provide a lot of shade – a great choice for the sunny part of the house.

Ways to hang curtains

Roller shades offer simplicity, with different models mounted on a rigid frame. You can hang regular curtains on a rod in various ways, which also serves as an interesting design technique. In addition to regular rings and clip-on crocodiles, designers increasingly use plastic or metal grommets—rings inserted directly into the fabric.

For volume and elegance, consider ties and ribbons, but only for lightweight fabrics. Textile loops placed on the rod embody minimal elegance. These loops can have fasteners, buttons, or Velcro, making curtains easy to remove for washing.

To hide curtain hardware, use decorative trim. This choice is excellent for curtains with folds and ruffles, as it allows for neat and even gathering in the same style. The most discreet option, although not very convenient for washing, is curtains with a sleeve that slides directly onto the rod.

Curtains and interior styles

Textiles in the kitchen are standalone accessories and one of the main elements in planning interior design. This includes not only pillows, pot holders, towels, and coasters but also stylish curtains that can easily become a notable accent!

Curtains for the kitchen in modern style

Even the freshest trends, despite the attraction to minimalism, do not completely abandon curtains. Instead, they allow you to experiment with materials, shapes, colors, and textures. Modern style delicately balances between pretentious classicism and abstract expressive futurism.

Combine different materials, but do not overuse accents. If you have several textures, unite them by color and dilute a monochrome composition with texture. If the overall decoration of the room is neutral, turn the curtains into a bright accent of deep saturated color.

Curtains for the kitchen in classic style

Classics require scope and monumentality, which is why complex and multi-layered compositions of curtains are traditionally used in it. Choose a thin semi-transparent fabric, and on top, luxurious velvet curtains. Use tiebacks, tassels, lambrequins, large metal hardware.

Instead of ordinary tulle, pay attention to silk or organza with delicate decorative embroidery. But keep in mind that it is more difficult to care for classic curtains, so hang them in the dining area. Using such complex compositions directly above the stove is not only impractical but also unsafe.

Curtains for the kitchen in Provence style

Cozy and warm rural style is largely built on textile decor. Pay attention to elegant curtains falling in waves or deliberately rough linen curtains. Frills, tape, ties, tiebacks, lace, and crochet inserts – all this is at your disposal in Provence.

Choose natural fabrics and pastel shades, but use special impregnations to preserve their beauty in the kitchen. Provence curtains will harmoniously complement polka dots or checkered patterns, floral and plant patterns, small ornaments, and embroidery.

Curtains for the kitchen in Scandinavian style

Scandinavian style combines conciseness, practicality, and rejection of artificial materials in the interior. Choose natural fabrics with expressive relief texture – linen, cotton, or even burlap instead of delicate silk. Use accessories and decorations made of wood or metal with a simple form.

The color scheme is as natural as possible: black, white, gray, beige, brown. Yellow, green, blue, or red is used for accents in patterns, tiebacks, or decorations. Pay attention to abstract geometry and the principle of contrasts – two popular techniques in Scandinavian style.

Kitchen Curtains in Loft Style

Even in a rough industrial loft, textile accessories are still necessary, especially in its modern variations that are more softened and adapted for regular apartments. Delicate and airy curtains or lace tulle would not fit in here, but there are still several options available.

The simplest and most practical solution is roman shades or any other type of roller shades. Classic multi-layer compositions are also interesting to look at because the loft allows you to combine modernity with retro. Or turn your curtains into a bold accessory – use bright and bold colors and extend them to the full length and height of the wall if the layout allows.

Choosing Curtains for a Small Kitchen

There is unlikely to be enough space for a full dining area in a small kitchen. In any case, the curtains will be located near the work surface, so we recommend choosing shortened models made of durable and stain-resistant fabrics.

If you need effective sun protection, choose dense roller models made of curtain fabrics. They take up less space but will protect you from the heat on the southern side or from prying eyes on the lower floors. If this is not necessary, pay attention to thin and lightweight airy fabrics that protect against street dust and dirt. These include organza, tulle, veil, mesh, and similar materials that do not overload the interior.
