1 Lily
Top of the no-go list for the bedroom are flowers with a strong scent, such as the indoor lily. It’s fine to grow it at home, but definitely not in your bedroom. Its intense, overpowering fragrance can quickly become unpleasant, causing headaches and allergies, leading to insomnia. This flower is better suited for a well-ventilated room.
2 Geranium
Another plant with a distinct, strong scent that not everyone appreciates. In general, it’s better to avoid such fragrant plants in the bedroom. Geranium does have beneficial properties: it purifies the air, repels mosquitoes and other insects in the summer, and kills viruses. However, placing it next to your bed and constantly inhaling the scent of its bright flowers can cause breathing problems and allergic reactions, including Quincke’s edema.
3 Ficus
Ficus is one of the most popular plants for homes and offices. However, it’s not a good choice for the bedroom. The leaves of some varieties contain latex allergens, numbering over a dozen. These can get into the air through sap (for example, if a shoot is damaged) or dust accumulated on the leaves. It’s better not to risk and avoid triggering allergic reactions, even if you haven’t had problems with it before.
4 Dieffenbachia
Another plant with dangerous sap is dieffenbachia. Gardeners love it for its large, striking leaves, but it’s not advisable to place it in the bedroom: any slight damage to the leaves will release a fluid that is not just harmful, but even dangerous for humans and animals. It can cause skin burns, irritate mucous membranes, and lead to itching and allergies. It’s best to keep the plant away from people and out of reach of children and pets.
5 African Violet
The African violet, known as the keeper of the hearth, is believed to bring positive family energy. However, regardless of whether you believe in such omens or not, this variety has no place in the bedroom. The dense, furry leaves tend to accumulate a lot of dust and small debris. If you’re not ready to constantly wipe and mist them, it’s better to find another spot for this beautiful flower—otherwise, you risk respiratory problems. For asthmatics, the African violet in the room is strictly contraindicated.
6 Monstera
Monstera is beneficial in itself, which is why it’s often chosen for home decor. However, it has downsides. Apart from the poisonous sap released when its leaves or stems are damaged, it actively consumes oxygen, especially at night. This proximity can lead to headaches and insomnia.
7 Clivia
Clivia, a plant with bright, striking flowers, can beautify any interior, but its flowers are where the danger lies. During blooming, the buds release essential oils and pollen with a strong scent. This can trigger allergies and cause unpleasant sensations in the nose or throat. At least during this period, it’s advisable to move the plant to another room, or even better, to not keep it in the bedroom at all.
