7 Unusual Design Techniques You’d Never Guess

Hidden Kitchen Set

In this project, the designer faced the task of decorating the living space so that nothing would distract from relaxation and rest. Therefore, in the kitchen-living area, the cooking zone was decided to be made as neutral and unobtrusive as possible. Thus, the sink and part of the set were hidden behind doors. It’s a real transformer: when they are closed, it seems like it’s just a normal cabinet matching the wall finish.

Larch Ceiling

In this apartment with Balinese motifs, the designer decorated the ceilings with larch — an unconventional move that made the home very atmospheric. To ensure that the textured finish didn’t oppress visually, it was balanced with white walls and a darker wooden floor. Moreover, the long narrow larch boards make the room visually longer and more voluminous.

Colorful Chandelier and Mirror in a Bright Frame

For this designer living room, they chose a very bold palette and several bright accents that attract attention. A multicolored chandelier, resembling a vintage crystal light, hangs from the ceiling. Next to it is a mirror wall in a bright red frame, reminiscent of the framework of a glass partition. There are other accents in this color in the room, so altogether it looks striking and yet harmonious.

Faux Window with Shutters

This apartment is decorated in a farmhouse style, unusual for urban housing, hence it features many country motifs, wooden furniture, and finishes. And, of course, decor. Thus, the wall behind the sofa in the living room is adorned not with a large painting, shelves with beautiful trinkets, or a mirror, but with a realistic faux window with real shutters. Due to the reflection, it seems that there is indeed something behind the glass. It looks very unusual and in the spirit of the stated style.

Mirrored Wall in the Dining Area

Dining areas are rarely decorated with mirrors: it seems, since they don’t play any functional role there, then there’s no need to hang them. But, in decorating this mini-studio, the designer not only used this accessory in the dining area but created an entire mirrored wall, which catches the reflection of light from the window and part of the room. This technique visually erases boundaries and significantly enlarges the space, which is very important for small apartments.

Combination of Brick and Contrasting Wallpaper

There’s an unwritten rule in design: not to make all walls accent ones, otherwise, it results in visual noise, and the interior only irritates. Therefore, most often, they make one out of four walls bright, covering it with paint of a saturated shade, contrasting patterned wallpaper, or a textured material. But in this project, the designer took a bold step and combined two bright accents at once: brick and colorful wallpaper with a multicolored pattern. As a result, it turned out original, bold, and harmonious, as red is present both in the wallpaper and in the large furniture, linking them with the brick walls.

TV Behind Lattice Panels

In this project, the designer faced the task of creating a light, airy space conducive to relaxation. Therefore, the black TV screen, standing out against the rest of the interior, was hidden behind sliding panels. Because they are not solid but have lattice cutouts, the entire structure looks very airy and matches the overall atmosphere of the room.
