If the apartment owner appreciates a light color scheme, exquisite quality furniture, and natural materials, then their choice is a modern-style bedroom.
Style Features
Most people understand modern differently, thinking that if the interior style is not classical, then it becomes “modern” by default, that is, contemporary. But the catch is that this direction was born in the 19th century, and the popular trends of that time differed significantly from the current ones. To avoid confusion, we will consider the traditional concept of modern and try to understand what is characteristic for it today:
- The interior is characterized by smooth lines, curves, and asymmetry.
- Nature has had a huge influence on modern followers: the design features floral themes, plant patterns, and animal ornaments.
- The use of natural materials is prioritized – this applies to both finishes and furniture with textiles.
- This style can be called architectural – arches, vaults and high windows fit wonderfully into such an interior.
- Despite all its decorative qualities, modern, undergoing some changes, remains functional.
Color Palette
Modern in the bedroom interior is distinguished by a neutral, calm palette. Brown, peach, cream tones are used. White and gray are not excluded. Soft, unobtrusive shades visually expand the space and help convey the flexibility of lines.
The bedroom should be maintained in tones that calm and set up for sleep. Bright shades are rarely used here: only as barely noticeable strokes.

The colors used should be in harmony with each other, not contradict and not break out of the general palette of the bedroom. Shades of black are suitable, giving modern magical notes, ash-blue and muted green tones. They should flow smoothly into each other, occasionally forming contrasts. A small room should be decorated in cream and wood tones.
Materials and Finishing
In Art Nouveau, textured surfaces are almost non-existent: you will not encounter coarse brick or concrete here. Walls are uniformly painted in calm tones, serving as a neutral background for furniture and decor. You don’t have to choose a single color: they can be combined, highlighting this or that area. Sometimes, walls are clad with wooden panels of light natural shades.
Unobtrusive plant ornamentation is also acceptable, so sometimes wallpaper with a pattern is used to decorate a bedroom in Art Nouveau style. But you should avoid an abundance of plastic, metal, and ceramics. The same applies to ceilings – they should decorate the bedroom, so molding is actively used in Art Nouveau, as well as two-tiered streamlined constructions.

The bedroom floor should not become the accent of the interior, so high-quality laminate flooring or parquet imitating wood is used as the floor covering. The floor shade should harmoniously fit into the setting, so it is chosen to be a few tones darker than the walls, or, on the contrary, it merges with them.
As linoleum is an unnatural material, it is difficult to fit it into the setting of a traditional bedroom.
Furniture Selection
Keeping in mind that decorativeness in the Art Nouveau style intertwines closely with functionality, you should choose furniture of quirky shapes with figured elements that are not devoid of convenience. It’s better if the bed and the rest of the set are made from the same type of wood, especially if the headboard is carved or figured. However, this recommendation can be omitted if the bed is chosen with a soft headboard. Low bedside tables are usually placed on both sides of the bed.
The room space is not cluttered with furniture, so even a small bedroom looks more spacious following the principles of Art Nouveau. The design, striving for smooth lines, visually unites all elements, combining them into a harmonious composition.

Not only natural wood but also glass is appreciated in the Art Nouveau style: it could be a bedside table, wardrobe fronts, mirrors. Interesting solutions are stained-glass inserts on windows and doors. Metal is not used as actively, but it is present as additional elements.
The wardrobe is usually chosen to be bulky and is placed in the far corner of the room. Its facades can be adorned with plant ornaments.
Lighting
The choice of material for Art Nouveau style lighting fixtures is not that important – their decorative and utilitarian functions are paramount. The shape of the lamps should support the stylistics of the bedroom. Products made of porcelain, metal, glass, or wood are suitable.
In addition to practical spotlights, elegant twisted chandeliers and wall lamps with soft diffused light are used in the bedroom. Table lamps with shades and floor torchieres are also appropriate.

Textiles and Decor
Art Nouveau bedroom design does not assume the presence of a large amount of textiles. Curtains, bedspreads, and pillows are chosen to be practical, made of natural dense fabrics.
The shades of the curtains and the rug decorating the floor do not differ much from the surrounding environment and are not the accent. Concise and smooth patterns are welcomed in textile design.

Accessories for the Art Nouveau bedroom are chosen as carefully as everything around. Popular are graceful vases of glass or with gold plating, paintings with images of girls or nature, round and carved frames for mirrors.
