How to Use Boho Style in Interior Design

You can’t be indifferent to the boho style in the interior: you either love it with all your heart, or you don’t. But however you relate to bohemian design, the fact remains – it is impossible to imagine a more cozy and unusual style.

Characteristic features of the style

Unlike the innately European styles that originated in French villages or English mansions, boho originated in the Bohemia region (Czech Republic), where free wandering gypsies, called bohemians, lived as early as the 17th century. The term bohemia, demonstrating a lifestyle similar to the gypsy one of creative intellectuals, also originated from them.

The boho style in design is recognizable at first glance, as it has a number of distinctive features:

  • A lot of textiles. Pillows, blankets, rugs, throws, even decor like tapestries or macrame. Fabric decorations should not just be there, there should be a lot of them.
  • Open storage. A multitude of cute things on shelves or in racks merge into a single creative mess.
  • Combining the uncombinable. To maintain the atmosphere of the style, there is no need to follow the rules: combine any shades, patterns, details. The main thing is that the resulting picture reflects the inner world of the hosts.
  • Natural materials. The decor includes a lot of wood, wool, paper, brick.

In general, boho in the interior is eclectic – it combines ultra-modern elements with vintage furniture, warm wood with painted brick, bright colors with neutral tones.

Varieties of boho

Exactly how boho will look in interior design largely depends on what it is added to.

Scandinavian boho

Scandinavian style is famous for its love of cozy space, but instead of a screaming palette, it prefers restrained white, gray, beige tones.

The mix of boho and scandi turns out to be calm, conducive to relaxation in the style of hygge.

Boho-chic

Boho-chic is considered the standard of boho style in apartment interiors. Bohemian chic combines natural shades with brighter, saturated colors. In boho-chic interiors, original metallic, glass accents are often found.

Glamorous boho

Most suitable under the description of “modern boho in the interior”. Glamor “styles” the negligence of the bohemian direction, but retains favorite patterns, bright tones, varied textiles.

Boho-Loft

If any style was destined to blend with boho style in home interior, it’s industrial. Both styles were created by a free creative youth, so their combination looks quite harmonious. Boho brings color and fabric to the loft, while the loft shares its rough textures.

Boho-Classic

Despite the fact that classic and bohemian are as far apart as hippies and aristocrats, the mix turned out to be successful. From the classic style, it has strict lines, symmetry. From bohemian – colorful paints, small details creating comfort.

Eco-Boho

Essentially, due to the love of wood and live plants, any direction of the style can be called eco-friendly. But if you take the pure eco-direction, it will resemble Scandi: restrained palette, a large number of potted plants, natural fabrics.

Boho-Hippie

Many consider hippies to be the ancestors of the style, but as you already know this is not the case. Hippies only brought some recognizable features into it: geometric patterns, handmade accessories.

What color palette to use?

The palette of boho-style can be divided into 2 large groups: neutral and bright.

The first includes shades of white, gray, sand with small inclusions of green, yellow, blue. Such interiors look natural, comfortable, and are done in Scandi or Eco sub-styles.

Saturated shades allow you to create an interesting unique design, suitable for people who are not afraid of color and love to surround themselves with unusual things. It can be implemented in two ways: monochrome light finish + colorful boho-style furniture, decor, or a completely colorful room.

What to consider when choosing a finish?

Most often, renovations are limited to painting the walls and ceiling in one tone, laying wooden floors.

The wall color can be light — it will be a great background for bright boho-style decor, or colorful, matching all elements of the room.

One of the vertical surfaces can be made accentuated, choosing abstract or geometric wallpapers, or painting it in a bright shade.

Don’t forget about textures: brick walls or wooden ceilings would suit the style.

What Furniture Suits?

Vintage sofas, sideboards, and credenzas are the best choices for boho style furniture. If you prefer to buy new, pay attention to the upholstery: burlap, suede, eco-leather would be suitable for the scandi. More vibrant directions would be decorated with a colorful sofa in velvet, velour, or tapestry.

Soft furniture is not just about the sofa. Chairs or armchairs in the boho style can be from the same set with the couch or, on the contrary, draw attention. For the latter, choose woven models or options with acid upholstery, unusual print.

The arrangement of living rooms would not be complete without poufs of various shapes and sizes: place a few near the bed, sofa or chair, use as a bench or coffee table.

Case boho furniture should also be old: various dressers, secretaries, sideboards with worn out areas will harmoniously fit into the interior.

Recommendations for Selecting Decor and Textiles

Boho style decor is the style’s business card. Most of the attention is given to textiles: decorative pillows, bedspreads, throws are essential for the sofa and bed. For the floor, there’s a carpet; for the wall, there’s macrame or tapestry; for the window, there’s curtains.

Tip! Use the principle of layering to make compositions look more harmonious.

The “non-textile” decor includes figurines, vases, mirrors, paintings or photos in frames, other wall decor (horns and skulls, world maps, dream catchers).

To make the design tasteful, combine all the details in compositions according to one common feature: color, shape, texture.

How Does it Look in Interior Rooms?

When your soul craves freedom, but you’re not sure that boho is the perfect style, decorate one room of the house and see: does such design suit you?

Living Room in Boho Style

Undoubtedly, the main accent of the room was, is and will be the sofa. And in boho, it is additionally highlighted with sofa pillows. The room will not be superfluous with a coffee table, a pouf or an armchair. The walls are occupied with paintings, tapestries, plants in hanging pots.

Boho-style Kitchen

A Bohemian kitchen somewhat resembles a blend of country and loft. The main rule—say “no” to minimalism: beautiful plates, jars, books, and pots should be on display, not hidden away in cabinets.

Focus on texture: a brick wall, an eastern-style apron, wooden panelling.

Boho-style Bedroom

If there’s any room that needs a special cozy atmosphere, it’s the bedroom. To create the perfect setting for sleep and relaxation, don’t skimp on textiles: make your bed with not just one bedspread, but 3-4 of different colors or sizes. Place 3-6 pillows on top instead of just one.

Boho Hallway

Boho interior design is less about practicality and more about comfort: if you want your home to welcome you with a cozy ambiance right from the doorstep, give up bulky wardrobes in favor of consoles, benches, and open hooks.

Bathroom

With the addition of vibrant towels, wooden elements, and live flowers, even a cold tile bathroom becomes cozy and “soft.”

Children’s Room

Decorating a children’s room in the bohemian style can surround your little one with care and guarantee peaceful sleep. The only downside—when the child starts to crawl or walk, you’ll have to move the beautiful baskets on open shelves up higher.

Boho Style in Balcony Interior

Boho is one of the few styles that allow you to make a loggia cozier with almost no investment. Seating and a rack for plants can be built from old pallets, while the plants themselves and textiles are relatively inexpensive.

Don’t be afraid of bold experiments and expressions of feelings: only this way can you reflect your inner world in the interior and show your individuality.
