Ceramic tile is a material that is experiencing a second birth thanks to new formats, reduced thickness, even greater wear resistance, and technological methods of coloring. It is used everywhere – on floors, walls, in interiors, and outdoors.
Traditionally, the first exhibition of the year that sets the trends is Cevisama in Valencia. The international exhibition of ceramics and finishing materials showcased many diverse novelties in February 2020, outlining the trends and directions of the industry.
Ceramic Coverings: 7 Trends from Cersaie 2022
Healthy Walls
In the current decade, the development of the manufacturing process determines the vector of the industry’s development. Porcelain stoneware becomes an increasingly strong and less porous material – its water absorption tends to zero. Surfaces are covered with special compounds that are resistant to scratches and dirt. At the same time, the possibilities of working with reliefs and color are expanding thanks to advanced digital technologies. Innovations in the field include tile coatings that can clean the air or completely absorb noise. Ceramic tiles made of red and white clay are given less attention, and most technological developments are focused on porcelain stoneware.
Agate
To enjoy the beauty of marble veins, it is not necessary to buy expensive slabs – so believe manufacturers who bet on imitations. They increasingly skillfully reproduce the natural pattern on ceramic granite and saturate it with graphics and color, “adjusting” nature. Thus, the classic material adapts to modern interiors. Colored stones – agate, malachite, aquamarine and quartz – actively compete with black and white “marble” and become a traditional finishing not only for floors, but also for walls and countertops.
Velvet
The development of technology allows manufacturers to experiment with imitations of natural textures and the creation of new designer reliefs. Brands are focused on finding rare textures and presenting more surface variations – even familiar matte and polished finishes have several options to choose from. Combined surfaces are also appearing, as well as controversial products such as velvet tiles.
Returning to Color
Color is a powerful tool in interior design and architecture. It plays a crucial role in how we perceive a space. Interiors are becoming more colorful due to the increased use of color schemes. Brands are concerned with personalization, with large manufacturers creating their own laboratories for developing color palettes and pattern grids.
Tile in the bedroom
The interior design industry predicts a trend towards organic spaces. Instead of furniture for living and dining rooms, people will choose furniture for the garden, such as benches, round concrete tables, and outdoor kitchens. Ceramic granite is no longer a material exclusively for “wet” areas such as kitchens and bathrooms. Tiles are conquering the spaces of living rooms and bedrooms as a wear-resistant, efficient material with great decorative potential.
Large and thin
Materials are becoming thinner, lighter, and larger. It can be said with confidence that large format ceramic tiles are the future of the industry. Every year, manufacturers produce materials of increasing size for flooring, walls, and work surfaces. This trend is also associated with a transition to large, bold patterns that immediately catch the eye.
Large Patterns
Ceramic tiles are becoming an alternative to traditional materials for residential spaces, such as wallpaper. The most common theme for large patterns is images of plants, birds, insects, and other ornamental designs, which is quite logical. Modern people strive to be closer to nature. Plants serve as accessories in interior design, not only in pots, but also on tiles.
