General Rules for Window Decoration for the New Year

Regardless of how you decorate the opening, there are several general rules to follow.

  • Decorations should not block light and view. The smaller the area and number of windows in a room, the more concise the decoration should be. It’s one thing if you’re decorating a large window for New Year, another if you have one small window for the entire room. In the first case, you can comfortably cover part of the glass with figures and garlands, while in the second, it’s better to decorate, for example, only the windowsill.
  • Remember safety. Place anything that burns and lights up so as to eliminate the risk of accidental fire. Ensure that small objects are out of reach of children and animals. If you choose paper decor for the New Year window, hang it so that it doesn’t accidentally get knocked over.
  • Maintain a consistent style. Select decorations for window openings in the same color scheme and concept as the rest of the thematic decor. Even better if they match the interior as a whole. Choose 2-3 leading shades and stick to them, and also look for corresponding textures.

Let’s explore different ways to decorate windows for New Year: from store-bought accessories that just need unpacking, to interesting DIY ideas that turn decorating into an exciting creative process.

Papercuts for New Year 2024 Windows

Papercut is a New Year decoration — an ornament cut out of paper. It’s very simple to make: take any ready-made template, print it on white or colored paper, and cut out the required figure. You can cut with scissors, a utility knife, a scalpel — or any other convenient tool.

New Year papercuts can be in the form of:

  • Snowflakes.
  • Abstract patterns.
  • Houses.
  • Birds and animals.
  • Pinecones, pine branches, berries.
  • Symbol of the year (the upcoming year is the rabbit).
  • Any holiday attributes.
  • Inscriptions, etc.

Depending on the concept, this can be a couple of paper decorations (for example, if you like minimalist New Year decor) or a large complex composition that occupies the entire glass surface.

There are several options for what to do with the finished stencils:

  • Stick to the window using double-sided tape.
  • Connect with a garland and hang horizontally or vertically.
  • Apply the cut-out stencil to the glass and go over it with a can of artificial snow — this will create very beautiful New Year windows.

Templates for New Year 2024 windows can be purchased in a stationery store, downloaded online, or created yourself in a graphic editor, choosing the desired theme, size, and shape of the drawing for the future decoration. Then — simply print the papercut templates for New Year windows. Here are a few ready-made options that can be used as a finished stencil.

How to Decorate a Window with Garland for New Year

One of the simplest yet striking options to decorate a window for New Year is to adorn the openings with garland (or even several!).

A bedroom with a bed and yellow curtains.

With Light Bulbs

Glowing garlands look especially atmospheric: they immediately create a festive atmosphere and will delight not only you but also those who pass by your windows. This decor is suitable for any room, just be cautious in a child’s room (especially if a child can reach the window decorations independently and without your knowledge). Usually, the decoration is hung on a curtain rod, but you can run it around the entire perimeter of the opening, securing it with double-sided tape, or attach it to the curtains.

When choosing a garland, consider several factors:

  • Model. There are traditional light strings, vertical “rain,” and LED nets.
  • Quality certificate. Do not buy glowing decorations from unknown and untrustworthy sellers. Having a certificate will protect you from the garland breaking down soon or accidental ignition.
  • Power type. Some garlands are plugged into the power socket, others work on batteries. Choose the option that suits you: for example, if there is no socket near the window, it makes sense to take an autonomous model. When purchasing, pay attention to whether batteries are included. If not, don’t forget to buy them too!
  • Color and light temperature. Multicolored flashing lights look very festive, but they can quickly become tiresome. This doesn’t mean you should avoid them, but it’s better not to hang them opposite the bed. For minimalist interiors, monochrome LEDs are suitable. Warm light will create a special coziness, so it’s not advisable to choose a very cold white light.

Pine Garland

A pine garland creates a completely different atmosphere. Artificial pine branches become a concise decoration with a natural feel, and real ones also act as a stunning natural air freshener. If you want to decorate your window for New Year by hand, make such decor yourself by sequentially tying together spruce or fir branches. You can leave them in their natural state or adorn them with pine cones, cinnamon, bows, baubles, and any other thematic details. However, if you want to decorate your dwelling quickly, a ready-made garland can be easily found in stores.

Depending on the configuration of the decoration, you can hang it above the window or run it around the perimeter. In the first case, you create a noticeable accent; in the second, you draw attention to the entire opening as a whole.

Fruit Garland

In addition to pine, the citrus scent is firmly associated with New Year’s celebrations, largely due to the traditional mandarins of this period. But fruits can be used not only on the table but also to create a beautiful and eco-friendly garland. It is best suited for decorating openings in Scandinavian, eco-style, or minimalism, especially in the kitchen. Dried orange or mandarin slices (if you don’t like citrus, replace them with apples) can be interspersed with small pine branches, bay leaves, cinnamon sticks, pine cones, berries, and other natural elements. The result is very natural and stylish.

To make the opening look even more festive, you can supplement the fruit hanging with paper figures or papercuts for New Year windows: print and stick them on.

The most popular paper decorations for the New Year theme are the Christmas star or flower. This decor came to us from Scandinavian interiors, but, like many attributes of this style, it quickly became popular in our own.

Paper figures have several advantages:

  • Made from inexpensive materials.
  • Eco-friendly and safe for the whole family.
  • Look concise and do not create a sense of excessive gaudiness.
  • Not difficult to make with your own hands.
  • Combine well with other accessories.

The paper for such decorations can be of any type: white, colored, craft, with or without a pattern. Sometimes, for added durability, figures are made from cardboard. Inside, you can place a mini-garland with a power block or any other autonomous light source — this turns it into not just a beautiful decoration, but also a festive lamp that provides atmospheric, soft illumination.

Stickers

If you don’t like DIY decor or don’t want to spend a lot of time on decoration and then cleaning the windows, stickers can be used instead of stencils.

Decorating in this way takes just a few minutes: you only need to take the stickers out of the package, choose a place, and stick them on. They are most often made from vinyl film. Stickers can be white, like paper cutouts from a stencil, or colored; in the form of illustrations, realistic photo prints, or with a 3D effect. Suitable for application to both glass and plastic, so they can be stuck not only on the window itself but also, for example, on the profile of double-glazed windows. After the holidays, they can be carefully removed — there will be no dirty traces left.

Decorative Composition

Finally, it’s important to remember that a window opening consists not only of glass but also of a windowsill.

It can — and should — be decorated, and sometimes this will be the only decor (for example, if you later don’t want to clean the window from stickers, artificial snow, or tape). Since the surface is quite narrow, it’s better to place compact items on it.

You can create a thematic composition from:

  • Decorative candles — scented and regular.
  • Pine branches — in bunches, in a vase, freely laid out.
  • Gingerbread houses and other edible decorations.
  • Dried fruits on a plate, in a jar, or as a garland.
  • New Year themed figurines.
  • Candle holders in the shape of houses, snowflakes, bells, etc.

Two main rules when decorating a windowsill: safety and convenience. It’s important that children or animals (and you yourself) don’t accidentally knock the decorations over, especially if the composition includes candles. Also, think about the placement of decorations so that they do not interfere with daily life. For example, if the space under the window is used as a countertop, make sure there is enough free space left for everything necessary.

Ideas for a Country House

Decorating windows for New Year in a house differs slightly from an urban apartment.

A christmas window display with candles and ornaments.

There, the main focus is on the windowsill and the interior side. However, in a country house, you can also emphasize the exterior side and attract as much attention as possible to the openings, as they are well visible from the garden. To ensure decorations are clearly visible from the outside and don’t get lost in the winter twilight, use large forms, bright colors, and, of course, lighting.

For decorating New Year windows facing the garden, consider:

  • Paper stars, balls, and snowflakes — better one large figure than several small ones. You can use lighting — some models are already sold with it, and it’s also not difficult to make a decorative lamp by hand.
  • Garlands. Any kind: regular LED, made from fruits and pine, Christmas toys, paper, assembled from photographs or magazine cutouts. If hanging lighting outside, only use special outdoor garlands.
  • Stickers or painting. You can print templates for New Year windows or paint the glass with special paint as your imagination suggests. Be sure to consider lighting so that the decorations are clearly visible.
  • Decorative compositions. On the windowsill, you can place candles, houses, glowing hills, figurines, pine cones — anything.

You can also decorate the outside windowsill! For example, hang a small wreath or lay out pine branches decorated with ribbons, toys, pine cones. Snow will beautifully settle on them, creating a truly fairy-tale atmosphere.
