7 Impractical Bathroom Interior Design Choices

Smooth Tile Flooring

Wet smooth tile flooring becomes slippery and hazardous. Of course, you could lay down a mat, but it won’t cover the entire surface, so the risk of falling remains.

What’s Better

Choose textured covering with slight roughness or materials with anti-slip coating — many manufacturers produce tiles and porcelain stoneware specifically for bathrooms. Also, consider the ease of cleaning: it’s important that the floor is easy to wash.

Brush Cup on the Sink Edge

The standard placement of a cup on the sink edge is inconvenient. First, water can get inside, creating a moist environment that breeds bacteria. Second, it’s easy to knock over the cup with any careless movement. Lastly, it’s inconvenient during cleaning: to wipe away moisture or dust, you’ll constantly have to move the container.

What’s Better

It’s convenient to hang the brush cup on the wall: this way, it won’t fall, and excess moisture won’t get inside. You could place it in a closed mirrored cabinet above the sink or in a cupboard below it.

Glass Shower Door without a Good Seal

Glass minimalist shower cabins are currently trendy. Such a design looks very stylish and fits well even in a small bathroom. However, if the door doesn’t close tightly, it can lead to leaks or mold.

What’s Better

When planning such a design, ensure to use quality seals on the door. They will protect you from potential issues. To prevent mold growth, regularly clean the seals and replace them as necessary.

Too Many Open Shelves

Open shelves look beautiful and stylish, but dust accumulates quickly on them, and the abundance of items creates visual clutter. Splashes from the shower can damage the coating and lead to mold.

What’s Better

You don’t have to completely abandon open storage: you can keep a few shelves (for example, in the shower area or next to the mirror), but for the main bulk of items, consider closed cabinets.

Overhead Light Above the Mirror

Placing bright lights above the mirror can create uneven lighting, glare, and shadows from behind. This, in turn, can interfere with skincare routines, makeup application, or shaving.

What’s Better

Hang sconces on both sides of the mirror at the level of your reflection for more even lighting. Or choose a model with LED lighting around the perimeter.

Insufficient Storage Systems

The lack of enough storage spaces, favoring other decorative solutions, will inevitably lead to clutter in the bathroom. Endless tubes and bottles will accumulate on the edges of the sink and bathtub, thereby creating visual disorder.

What’s Better

Plan cabinets and shelves in advance. The more space you dedicate to storage, the cleaner your bathroom will look. However, don’t overload a small space with cabinets as it will appear too cramped.

Too Small a Mirror

A small mirror in the bathroom will be inconvenient to use for skincare procedures or applying makeup. Besides, it simply looks disproportionate on an empty wall.

What’s Better

The bathroom mirror should reflect at least the chest or waist-up. Also, avoid hanging an overly large

accessory in a bulky frame as it visually reduces the wall. An exception is seamless glass panels from floor to ceiling.
