7 Best New Year’s Wall Decor Ideas

New Year’s holidays are a perfect opportunity to decorate your living space and create a magical atmosphere in the interior. And in this case, decoration is not limited to a Christmas tree in the living room and thematic textiles. This article discusses how to decorate a wall in any room: what decorations are currently relevant and suitable for different rooms. There are options to suit every taste.

Decor Options

There are dozens of options for wall decor (including thematic ones). You can choose from a store or make them yourself.

Fir Branches

The simplest way to create a winter mood and a sense of celebration in an apartment or house is to add a couple of fir branches. Just seeing them will do the trick, and if they’re real, you’ll also get a fabulous pine scent. People use the branches in various ways: some put them in a vase like a bouquet, others hang them over the table like a light fixture. And, of course, a fir branch or a couple of small ones can be attached to the wall in the form of a wreath, circle, garland, or in their natural state. They can also be laid on a shelf or fireplace. This is a universal decor that will suit any room and any style.

Wall Garland

Another classic festive decor is the garland.

You can arrange it on the wall in stripes, waves, or create some geometric shape. Lay it on shelves, wrap it around the frame of a mirror or pictures. There are many ways.

Garlands themselves also come in different types:

  • With multicolored LEDs, like the ones usually hung on a Christmas tree.
  • With larger bulbs.
  • Non-lighting, for example, made of paper, cardboard, or tinsel.

If you want to decorate a wall for New Year’s on your own, making a decor without lights is not difficult. Use cones and berries, miniature toys, postcards and photographs, or cut out paper figures. For such creativity, you only need the decorations themselves, a rope, and glue to fix the details.

Wreaths

These can be lush compositions with coniferous branches, Christmas ornaments, pine cones, or sweets. Or simpler versions with minimal decor or none at all – such are usually chosen by minimalists. If you don’t know how to decorate a wall by yourself for the holidays, try making such a wreath.

You can hang a wreath not only on the front door but also on the wall. It’s a good way to fill the empty space above a sofa or table. Sometimes they are also used to decorate kitchens, but in this case, it’s important to ensure that needles or other details don’t end up in food during cooking.

Paintings and Posters

Paintings and posters are a type of wall decor present in every home.

It’s not necessary to add new ones and make additional fittings – you can simply replace some of the existing ones temporarily. Choose thematic subjects: winter landscapes, illustrations of Christmas trees, gifts, gingerbread houses, etc. Anything that fits the overall style of the room will do.

For a child’s room, you can choose appropriate drawings, and for a bedroom or living room – something more restrained and stylized so that the posters don’t look childish or too obvious.

Paper Figures

For interiors in Scandi, eco, and minimalist styles, concise paper hangings are ideal.

The classic options are stars or snowflakes. You can also make lanterns, ribbed balls, or simply abstract geometric shapes. The advantages of such decorations:

  • They are eco-friendly, suitable for bedrooms and children’s rooms.
  • Not too colorful and bright, can be simply white or silver.
  • Easy to make with your own hands.
  • Lightweight, can be hung on the wall without drilling and complex auxiliary fittings.

Christmas Tree

Of course, not a real one, but a stylized appliqué fixed to the wall.

Such a homemade decor can look very stylish, especially if you choose a single concept for it, such as Scandinavian style or retro. Moreover, the craft is quite large-scale, and it’s great to make it as a family. Children can be involved in creating the lower tiers or making small details.

It’s convenient to place such a decoration at the end of a narrow space, such as a corridor, or just on a free section of the wall in any room. An interesting idea is to hang miniature bags with gifts for family and friends on the “branches” or envelopes of a homemade advent calendar.

Natural Decor

An eco-friendly and budget-friendly way to decorate your apartment for the holidays is to use what nature provides.

In a park or at your country house, you can gather pine cones, broken branches, acorns. From all these, you can create a garland or simply an appliqué.

Another option that has been popular for several years is decorations made from dried fruits or berries. Most often, these are bright orange slices of oranges, but you can use anything: apples, cranberries, nuts. Often such compositions are complemented with cinnamon sticks – for both the look and the aroma.

Ideas for Different Rooms

Let’s consider how to stylishly, conveniently, and safely decorate walls for the New Year in different rooms.

Living Room

Often the focal point in the living room is the wall behind the sofa. If there is usually nothing on it, you can confidently hang a wreath, fir branches, or a garland there. Already have paintings or posters? Temporarily replace them with thematic ones, as we already described above. Small areas (for example, a narrow strip of wall between two windows or a corner of the room) can be filled with compact decor like a paper star, sticker, or small fir branch.

Kitchen

The main principles of decorating a kitchen are safety and practicality. Decorations should not catch fire, get into food, or release toxic substances. They should also not be susceptible to moisture and grease stains. Therefore, it’s better to avoid placing anything directly in the cooking area or limit yourself to thematic functional decor on the countertop. However, the wall above the dining table can and should be decorated. Hang a garland there, a poster with a New Year theme, or, if you want to decorate this area for the New Year with your own hands, make a mini-panel of photographs, dried fruits, branches, and pine cones.

Bedroom

In the bedroom, it’s important to create a sense of coziness while not visually overloading the space. Therefore, avoid too bright and flashy decorations. If you’re decorating the wall behind the headboard, ensure everything is securely fastened to avoid accidental injuries. And in general, it’s better not to hang something heavy and/or breakable above the bed. The best option is a garland, paper hanging, or a small lightweight coniferous wreath.

Children’s Room

The same rules apply to the children’s room as to the bedroom, plus the emphasis on safety. Hang decorations securely and high enough so that children cannot accidentally reach and drop a poster, garland, or other composition on themselves. Handmade decorations fit well into this room, and if the child is old enough, allow them to decorate their personal space on their own. Or at least consider their preferences when choosing thematic decorations.

Entryway

The entrance area is often small in size, so the wall here is the most successful option for decorating the space without taking up extra room. A lot of decorations are not necessary: just hang a garland, a wreath, or a couple of posters with a New Year theme.
